Fauja Singh isn’t your typical marathoner. At 101, he is reported to be the oldest person in the world who has covered the 26.2-mile distance. But now the “turbaned tornado” — as he’s called — has decided to call it quits.

According to Singh’s trainer, Harmander Singh, the marathoner will continue to stay active with light exercise. “He wanted to run forever,” his trainer said. “But as soon as he crossed the finishing line I had to persuade his family to let him run for one more year. I have to manage his mental and physical wellbeing. Why not retire at the top?”

Fauja has said that he will run the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon on February 25. This race takes place five weeks before the marathoner’s 102nd birthday. Singh is from Illford in the United Kingdom and is a great grandfather. Apparently, after his marathon retirement, he will run shorter races in cities like Mumbai, Mauritius, Toronto and Singapore.
