Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. Hebrews 10:35
I have found out time after time that my self-confidence only leads to a greater fall. I couldn't even tell you how many times I have totally messed things up to the point that even I "Mr. Optimism" have to admit that there is no way out and no way to salvage the situation. Many of us living in the city have thrown away our confidence in God's power. We daily see the worst in people, as well as the best. We are daily confronted with the total depravity of human nature and the effects it has upon children, families and society. It's easy to look at the church in its self-absorbed, self-preserving state and become cynical. It's not hard to throw away confidence.
On the other hand, I believe that God's people respond to genuine confidence in the power of the Gospel to grow God's kingdom even in the most difficult situations. The writer of Hebrews says "you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised." vs 35. Let's have some confidence here!, but not in ourselves, not in or our system, not in our structures. Let's show some confidence in God's will being done in and through our lives. Doing the will of God in ministry to the city takes all the endurance I can muster because everything seems to work against us. God is greater than I. Christ has overcome. This is where I can find my confidence.
